Swimming not only improves baby development through fitness and strength, but delivers a noticeable difference in baby’s physical ability on land.
Swimming has a profound effect on baby development. Babies love the repetitive movement of bouncing and splashing in the pool, and this movement provides fantastic stimulation for the vestibular system, allowing baby to sense motion and balance. As this system matures it will help your little one meet lots of mini stages in its baby development such as keeping their head upright, pulling themselves up on their feet, balancing, and finally walking.
Chasing after colourful swim toys in the pool and grasping hold of them is a great exercise for enhancing hand-eye coordination. The cross lateral movement of reaching out is the same one used in crawling. This teaches both sides of the brain to work together, to help to coordinate physical movements and strengthen nerve pathways between the two sides, helping the brain store and retrieve information more effectively – all great for learning and baby development!
Physically, swimming is wonderful for your baby, and the only form of exercise they can do literally from birth. Just 30 minutes in the pool provides a complete workout for them (and you!) and parents often find that their little ones eat and sleep better on swimming days. Swimming not only improves baby development through fitness and strength, but delivers a noticeable difference in baby’s physical ability on land. Regular swimmers have often been shown to crawl and walk earlier than their peers.
Swimming with baby is also a fantastic bonding experience for mum or dad! Floating in bathtub temperature water with your baby is a truly magical experience. Combine that with the fact that your skin is in contact with theirs, stimulating all the nerve fibres, and it’s one of the best ways of enhancing the connection between you. It’s a bond that is further strengthened through the fun you’ll have together.
